Petplan pet insurance company released a list of the top 10 conditions for which claims were filed in 2013 for both dogs and cats:
- Vomiting and Diarrhea
- Cancer
- Lameness
- Skin infections
- Allergies
- Periodontal Disease
- Ear Infections
- Cruciate injuries
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Foreign Body Ingestion
Most of the conditions in this list could summarize the cases I see almost everyday in practice. Skin infections, allergies, and ear infections are often related and can start at a relatively early age and tend to be chronic conditions. Therefore, getting insurance for your pet early in life would make sure these condtions are covered. An example was given of a 5 year old Boxer that has needed $16,500 in treatment for allergies so far.
Claims for stomach ailments averages over $500 with an example of 1 claim that reached $20,000.
Claims for cruciate injures averaged $2500 with one claim reaching $14,915.
One condition, periodontal disease of the teeth and gums rose sharply on the list probably because more and more pet owners recognize the importance of maintaining their pet's oral health and veterinarians ability to more accurately diagnose it. The average cost of treating periodontal disease was $460 with one claim reaching $5,600.
